“We can’t stress enough, it’s really our first winter snowstorm of significance, and it’s a pretty tough one. It’s not the normal, we get a couple inches and we can get through it. This takes patience, it takes us to reeducate ourselves, rethink about out driving habits, and just get back into winter driving.”
This came from our County Road Commission Deputy Managing Director of Operations, Jerry Byrne, this past week as West Michigan was hit hard this past week with 19.2″ of snow within a 96 hour period.

Immediately, a message came out to our team that our ‘in-office’ meetings were cancelled.
Here’s the magical part of this story…
At no point was I worried we weren’t going to be able to service our clients. At Lean Solutions, we have perfected our hybrid work model allowing us to empower businesses to achieve sustainable growth, operational excellence, and an agile, future-ready workforce from anywhere in the world, at any time, and no matter the weather conditions!
Operational Excellence is a cornerstone of success at Lean Solutions. Lean Solutions is a dynamic company that goes far beyond traditional training and consulting. We are DOERS, not TALKERS. We specialize in driving total transformational change across organizations, helping them redefine their operational efficiency. However, in today’s constantly changing workplace, achieving it in a hybrid work model—where our team splits their time between remote and an in-office environment—requires a fresh approach. How do we consistently deliver value, eliminate waste, and maintain alignment when our workspaces are no longer defined by a single location?
Here’s the good news: hybrid work offers opportunities to enhance operational excellence. By focusing on standardizing processes, leveraging Lean principles, and strengthening leadership, organizations can adapt and thrive…just like Lean Solutions has!
The Reality of Hybrid Work
Hybrid work isn’t just a trend; it’s a strategic choice for many organizations. Employees enjoy greater flexibility, work-life balance, and autonomy. At the same time, companies benefit from cost savings and access to a broader talent pool.
However, the hybrid model comes with challenges. Communication silos, inconsistent workflows, and difficulty maintaining a cohesive culture can undermine operational efficiency. The key to overcoming these hurdles lies in embracing Operational Excellence tailored to hybrid environments.
And…
Virtual work environments cannot replace the benefits an in-person work environment delivers. At no point did you hear me recommend 100% virtual work environments; sure, sometimes it may be necessary or, depending on the industry, might be the right strategy. However, we are relational beings. Humans need contact with other humans. Developing a strong culture through in-person work environments is crucial for fostering collaboration, trust, and a sense of community within an organization. When employees are physically present together, it’s easier to build personal connections, share ideas spontaneously, and align on company values. Face-to-face interactions promote stronger communication and allow for more immediate feedback, which in turn helps teams stay aligned, engaged, and motivated. In-person environments also create opportunities for mentoring, knowledge-sharing, and team-building activities that can significantly strengthen relationships and promote a positive organizational culture. Ultimately, these interactions help create a cohesive workforce that is more adaptable, innovative, and committed to the company’s mission.
So…lets talk about a HYBRID environment!
Key Pillars of Operational Excellence in Hybrid Work
1. Standardize Processes: Clear and consistent processes are critical in hybrid settings. Ambiguity can lead to inefficiency and mistakes, so standardization becomes the foundation for success. Document workflows, define responsibilities, and use tools like shared dashboards to keep everyone aligned, regardless of location. Check out GembaDocs from Tom Hughes for some great examples!
2. Strengthen Communication Hybrid teams need more than tools; they need intentional communication strategies. Regularly scheduled check-ins and inclusive team discussions ensure everyone feels connected. Informal moments, such as virtual coffee chats, can go a long way in building camaraderie and trust. I absolutely loved how Menlo Innovations responded when they had to go 100% remote for a short time…they mirrored their in-person work completely online. I was able to virtually sit in and watch as they kept communication open between team members using various virtual tools.
3. Measure and Improve Data-driven decision-making is the backbone of Operational Excellence. Use relevant metrics—such as cycle times, customer satisfaction, or employee engagement—to track progress and identify opportunities for improvement. Feedback loops, combined with iterative adjustments, ensure your hybrid model evolves to meet your team’s needs. Caution! Creating a way for leaders to view metrics virtually should NEVER eliminate the need to go to the gemba!
Leadership’s Role in Hybrid Operational Excellence
Leadership is pivotal in making hybrid work successful. Leaders must empower their teams, foster trust, and guide them through challenges with transparency and adaptability.
Ask questions like, “What do you think we should do?” to encourage ownership and critical thinking. Recognize successes to build morale and motivation. Above all, lead by example—your actions set the tone for how teams embrace Operational Excellence in this new environment.

Operational Excellence in hybrid work models is about more than maintaining efficiency—it’s about creating a system where teams thrive. By standardizing processes, enhancing communication, and leveraging data, organizations can navigate the complexities of hybrid work with confidence.
As we continue to redefine how and where we work, the key is to remain flexible, innovative, and committed to continuous improvement. Let’s lead the charge in making Operational Excellence the norm in hybrid environments!
